There are old orchards where fallen fruit is never gathered after dusk.

The first windfalls of autumn are said to mark the point at which the orchard begins keeping its own account. Fruit found beneath the trees before morning may be taken. Fruit heard falling after dark is best left where it lies.

The Guild records the Windfall Ghosts as appearing shortly after the first fruit drops, most often between the outer rows where the grass has grown long. They are rarely seen arriving. By morning they are simply there, standing among the fallen apples as though they have been counting them.

Whether they guard the orchard, claim its offerings, or merely wait for something else to arrive has never been established.

Varden is most often recorded after hard evening winds, when the orchard has gone dark before the fallen fruit has been gathered and the branches continue moving long after the worst of the weather has passed.

Several Guild accounts place him beneath trees that have shed heavily overnight. Curiously, fruit found closest to Varden is often unmarked despite the violence of its fall, while apples farther away may be split open against the ground.

The older records regard him as a keeper of storm-fallen things. Where Varden appears, the orchard is said to have surrendered something unwillingly, and the Guild advises leaving the first windfall untouched until morning.
