The History of the Ghost Merchants Guild
Once there was a Ghost Merchants Guild. The guild is believed to have operated across the Nordic regions from the Viking age. For centuries the work continued quietly. Ghost merchants were just part of the fabric. Norse ghost lore runs deep in these lands.
But The Reformation ended much of that.
In 1536 The Reformation arrived in Denmark, and the country converts to Lutheranism. Overnight the old ways, anything scented of Catholic folk practice, of spirits, of the space between the living and the dead, becomes not just unfashionable but dangerous. Heretical. Ghost makers were deemed akin to witches.
The guild shattered, ghost makers fled, or worse. Knowledge was lost. Ghosts were seized by authorities who didn't understand what they were. They were locked away, documented incorrectly or not at all. Some were never claimed. Some are waiting still.
In the early 1600s the witch trials peaked in Denmark. By this point what remained of the guild was driven underground. And it never recovered.
Now we're what's left in the Nordics. We honour the old ways and seek out The Impounded Ghosts.
So welcome to The Nordic Ghost Merchants. I make ghosts on a quiet, haunted island of Scandinavia. I hope you'll stay awhile.
