The Familiars do not belong to the guild. Not exactly.

They were never apprenticed, never sworn in, never given a merchant's mark. They simply... arrived. As cats do. And having arrived, they stayed. As cats do.

They learned the rhythms of the guild; the long hours, the careful work, the particular silence of a room where old things are being recorded. And they decided this was acceptable.

They are not catalogued in the Merchant's Ledger.

They are aware of this. They have opinions about it that they have chosen not to share.

Thornby is most often recorded where the orchard gives way to hedgerow, bramble and thorn, particularly after fruit has rolled beyond the cultivated rows and vanished into the undergrowth.

Several Guild notes describe him appearing beside narrow paths that were clear the evening before but found partially overgrown by morning. Windfallen apples recovered nearby are sometimes scored with fine scratches, though no animal tracks have been found around them.

He is regarded as a keeper of the orchard boundary. Where Thornby settles, the older records advise gathering only what lies in open ground and leaving anything claimed by the hedge exactly where it fell.
