There are old orchards where fallen fruit is never gathered after dusk.
The first windfalls of autumn are said to mark the point at which the orchard begins keeping its own account. Fruit found beneath the trees before morning may be taken. Fruit heard falling after dark is best left where it lies.
The Guild records the Windfall Ghosts as appearing shortly after the first fruit drops, most often between the outer rows where the grass has grown long. They are rarely seen arriving. By morning they are simply there, standing among the fallen apples as though they have been counting them.
Whether they guard the orchard, claim its offerings, or merely wait for something else to arrive has never been established.
Rupert is most often recorded beneath the oldest trees in the orchard, particularly those whose bark has darkened with age and whose fruit falls without warning even in still weather.
Several Guild accounts describe apples dropping nearby one at a time, with long intervals of silence between each fall. Rupert is invariably found facing the tree by morning, though no record describes anyone witnessing his arrival.
He is regarded as a keeper of the old orchard. Where Rupert appears, the records advise leaving the first fallen fruit untouched, for the oldest trees are said to remember every hand that has harvested from them.
Rupert the ghost figurine stands at 8 cm in height.
