Alistair was the first to arrive. No one recorded when. The guild simply looked up one day and he was there, settled on the uppermost shelf, watching the work with the patient expression of someone who had already decided to stay. He has been there since. He will be there still.
The Familiars do not belong to the guild. Not exactly.
They were never apprenticed, never sworn in, never given a merchant's mark. They simply... arrived. As cats do. And having arrived, they stayed. They learned the rhythms of the guild; the long hours, the careful work, the particular silence of a room where old things are being recorded. And they decided this was acceptable.
They are not catalogued in the Merchant's Ledger.
They are aware of this. They have opinions about it that they have chosen not to share.
The Chronicler Cats have been in the guild longer than anyone can verify. They remember things that were never written down. They will not be writing them down either.
They simply watch. They simply know.
And they are, on occasion, available.
